Asbestos was commonly used in vinyl floor tile and flooring adhesives for decades because of its durability and heat resistance. Many homes and commercial buildings constructed before the 1980s may still contain flooring materials that include asbestos.
If you discover older tile while renovating or removing flooring, it is important to determine whether the material could contain asbestos before disturbing it further. Professional asbestos testing is the only reliable way to confirm whether asbestos fibers are present.
One of the most common indicators of asbestos-containing flooring is the size of the tile. Many older installations used 9x9 vinyl asbestos tile, which was widely manufactured using asbestos fibers.
These tiles were commonly installed in kitchens, basements, schools, offices, and commercial buildings. However, tile size alone does not confirm the presence of asbestos, and professional evaluation is recommended before removal.
When old flooring is removed, a dark adhesive is often discovered beneath the tile. This material is commonly referred to as black mastic adhesive, which was frequently used to secure vinyl tile installations.
Some older mastics may contain asbestos fibers. Because it can be difficult to determine the composition of adhesive materials visually, testing is recommended before attempting removal.
When asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed, microscopic fibers can become airborne. These fibers may remain suspended in the air and can spread throughout the building if not properly controlled.
For this reason, suspected asbestos floor tile should not be sanded, scraped, or aggressively removed without proper containment procedures.
If asbestos is confirmed through laboratory analysis, the material may require regulated asbestos removal procedures. Licensed professionals use containment barriers, negative air systems, and controlled removal methods to prevent the spread of fibers.
