What Is Black Mastic Adhesive?

Black mastic adhesive is a petroleum-based flooring adhesive that was commonly used beneath vinyl floor tile in older homes and commercial buildings. In many installations prior to modern asbestos regulations, this adhesive may contain asbestos fibers.

If flooring materials are removed or disturbed during renovation, the adhesive beneath the tile may require professional asbestos testing to determine whether asbestos is present.

Where Black Mastic Is Commonly Found

Black mastic adhesive is most commonly discovered beneath older vinyl floor tile installations. It was widely used because of its durability and strong bonding properties.

This adhesive is frequently found beneath 9x9 vinyl asbestos tile installed in homes, schools, offices, and commercial buildings constructed prior to the 1980s.

Why Black Mastic May Contain Asbestos

Many adhesives manufactured decades ago included asbestos fibers to improve strength and heat resistance. When these adhesives are disturbed during flooring removal or demolition, asbestos fibers may become airborne.

Because visual inspection cannot confirm whether asbestos is present, laboratory testing is required to determine whether regulated abatement procedures are necessary.

Removing Black Mastic Adhesive

If asbestos is present, removal of black mastic adhesive must be performed using regulated abatement procedures. Containment barriers, negative air systems, and controlled removal methods are used to prevent fiber migration during the process.

Professional Testing and Evaluation

Professional inspection and testing allow property owners to determine whether adhesive materials contain asbestos before renovation work continues.

Testing results help determine whether the adhesive can remain in place, be encapsulated, or must be removed through regulated asbestos removal procedures.

What To Do If You Discover Black Adhesive Under Tile

If black adhesive is discovered beneath flooring materials during renovation, it is best to avoid disturbing the material until testing can be performed.
